Incredible, One-of-a-Kind Sorority Jewelry

Kappa Alpha Theta pendants

A retired art teacher of 32 years, Donna Johnston spends her winters in Texas, her summers in Michigan, and free time making incredible sorority jewelry. Donna has been a member of the Greek community for over 60 years! She is a member of Pi Beta Phi – passing her legacy down to her granddaughters. Using them as her inspiration, she began designing these beautiful pendants that she sells through her Etsy shop. Please check out her amazing sorority pendants that are only $19.50 plus $5 shipping here.

Kappa Alpha Theta pendants

Completely her own designs, Donna draws them first in ink, sends them to a lazer to cut them out of brass, and then she finishes the cutting process by filing each one and tumbling them for about 18-24 hours. After this, she puts a bail on each and they are plated in gold or silver. It’s incredible to think that each stunning pendant has so much thought, care, and time put into it.

Donna was beyond generous to send me two pendants for my own sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta. When I first opened the package, my breath completely left me. I had seen her designs online, but seeing them in person is a completely different experience. The attention to detail is so clear in the design and quality of the pendants.

While Donna’s jewelry takes center-stage, I also want to talk about Donna herself because she’s an incredibly inspiring woman. I had the incredible privilege of being able to chat with her over email and learn a little about her life. The legacy Donna has left behind her is absolutely remarkable. I respect her so much.

Here are some of the many jobs Donna has had:

  • Art teacher for grades K-12
  • Kindergarten teacher
  • Third grade teacher
  • Fifth grade teacher
  • Seventh grade teacher
  • Professor at Bowling Green University
  • Professor at Eastern Michigan University
  • Professor at Toledo University
  • Workshop teacher at local schools
  • Teacher at the Toledo Museum of art (children and adult classes)
  • Supervising teacher for student teachers
  • Elementary Principal
  • Author of her own book, “Now This is Art!”
  • Art gallery owner

I don’t know about you, but if I were to accomplish 1/4 the amount Donna has, I would be incredibly satisfied with my life. She also teaches art classes from her home and participates in art shows. She also attends various art classes like the watercolor class she’s enrolled in now! I highly recommending checking out her book – it’s great for young educators looking for new ways to teach art. Donna has put so much time and thought into it, it won’t disappoint.

Donna shared this quote with me from somebody she met at a meeting a few years ago: “We are always in the process of becoming!” Donna lives by this and firmly believes that constantly learning is what keeps one young in mind and heart.

I am beyond inspired by this woman. At almost 85 years old, she still has a thirst for knowledge. Her kindness, generosity, and passion shine through her incredible life’s work. I hope to live as full of a life as Donna has. She has inspired me to follow my passions and have the heart of a servant. Her dedication to education is remarkable. I am sure she has changed the lives of so many. I can only hope that I lead as a fulfilling of a life as Donna has.

Working with her has been an incredible pleasure. I hope that everybody reading this checks out her sorority jewelry store as well as her personal art store. I wish there was some way I could give back to this woman who has inspired me more than she knows.

Donna is licensed to make pendants for the following sororities:

Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Phi, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Xi Delta, Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Delta Zeta, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Mu, Phi Sigma Sigma, Pi Beta Phi, Sigma Delta Tau, Sigma Kappa, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Zeta Tau Alpha

Please check out her amazing pendants that are only $19.50 plus $5 shipping here.

I received these pendants from Sorority Jewelry free of charge. All opinions are my own.

Jewelry Obsession: Forever 21

Jewelry from Forever21

If you know me at all, you know that I’m a bit of a shopaholic. My excuse? There are way worse things to be addicted to.

Anyways! I just wanted to share some of my favorite thrifty jewelry finds as of late! All of the jewelry below is from Forever 21. Honestly, Forever21 is pretty much the only place I buy fashion jewelry from (with the exception of rings). When you’re looking for more trendy items like statement necklaces or a bold pair of earrings, you don’t want to spend a ton of money. I’ve found Forever 21 jewelry for the most part to be decent quality at a very low price. They’re my go-to place when I’m looking for statement necklaces in particular. They have an amazing selection!

I apologize for the low quality of the picture. I had to take this with my iPhone 4s because I lost my camera cord the other day! The new one is coming in the mail soon (Thanks Amazon Prime!).

Plum Paper – Your New Go-To Place for Planners (Discount Code!)

Plum Paper

Created by a Chapman University graphic design aluma, Kristina Kardous, Plum Paper produces beautiful, high-quality planners and stationary. Kristina began by making simple notecards and wedding invitations, but her work quickly evolved into something of its own. While their planners are the most popular item, their full line wedding stationary can be found in wedding and stationary stores across the nation.

Plum Paper places an emphasis on customer service – they strive to put smiles on their customer’s faces and help them live a more organized life. The company is always working to improve their products and increase customer satisfaction. (there may or may not be a gift for my readers down at the bottom of this post) ♥

Plum Paper

I first found Plum Paper on Etsy (click here to visit the store!)– where you can actually buy their products. I have a weakness for office supplies and stationary, so I fell in love when I saw the bright, colorful prints and stunning planners they offered. When I reached out to Kristina to write this post, she was more than accommodating and friendly! It is clear that she loves what she does and genuinely cares about the happiness of her customers.

Now let’s talk about the planners themselves because they’re AMAZING!

  • Made out of thick, sturdy paper, metal spiral binding, and hard plastic covers, they are extremely durable.
  • With 12 monthly laminated tabs, a contacts page, and a two-sided pocket folder, it’s impossible to NOT be organized with one of these planners.
  • Plum Paper offers personalization options as well, so you can chose how you want the days broken down, what name or image you want on the front, and what cover design you want.
  • They even offer extras such as notes pages, contact pages, checklists, and added months.

Plum Paper planner layout Plum Paper planner notes and extras Plum Paper planner monthly spread

What sets Plum Paper apart from their competitors is their affordable prices (planners range from $15-$35) and the ability to choose from:

Each type is tailored to the customer’s needs. For example, the student planners have the option of having class lists and can be divided by semester. BONUS: the student planners are only $16! Wedding planners have sections for budgets, timelines, and guest lists. There’s really something for everyone here!

Plum Paper is by far the superior company when it comes to planners. I know many people love other brands, but I can say between the affordability of these and the incredible woman who runs it, this is the place to buy them!

Kristina has graciously provided all my readers with 10% off their order! Simply enter the code SMALLTOWN10 at checkout and you’ll get the discount! This offer is only good for a month (expires March 23rd), so be sure to grab your planner now. Even if you already have a planner now, think ahead about next year or gifts for friends. You won’t be disappointed!

Remember to enter SMALLTOWN10 for 10% off your order! Expires March 23rd.

I was not paid by Plum Paper nor did I receive any free products for this post. All opinions are my own.

Outfit of the Day: Feb. 22nd

Today was all about getting things done. Between organizing my blog, cleaning my room, and working on homework, my plate was full. I woke up at 10am and worked on organizing myself for my blog posts coming up until 2ish. Then I cleaned my room. At 4pm, I rode my bike to Dodge and was there for FOUR HOURS working on one project for my desktop publishing class. Don’t get me wrong, it’s super fun and I love it, it’s just hard being a perfectionist because I spend hours on one project. It all turned out great! So at 8pm, I rode my bike back and now I’m writing this post! Tonight will definitely be a Netflix, soup, and jammies night. Crazy, right?

Since I was running around today, I wanted to be comfortable and cute. I decided on some boyfriend jeans, a baggy t-shirt, sandals, and a chunky knit scarf. Boyfriend jeans are seriously the best invention ever – they feel like sweatpants! And God bless Urban Outfitters for making baggy t-shirts in style! I was comfy, cozy without looking sloppy! The bright colors made me happy while I muddled through my mundane tasks.

Outfit of the Day: Feb. 20th

It was so hot yesterday! Even though I love this outfit, I was dying of heat. I had work for alumni relations where I have to dress business casual. Since I wasn’t feeling great, I didn’t want to wear anything too constricting. I decided to throw on these leggings (they’re sneaky because they look like pants), a nice blouse, my favorite bright blue statement necklace, and some taupe booties. I wish I had black booties too – that would make this outfit look a million times better. I love these leggings because they look really nice and are a fun pattern, but they are actually super comfortable and stretchy. I wear this blouse all the time. I want it in every color! It’s the perfect dressy t-shirt. The statement necklace really brings out my eyes and provides a pop of color.

Warby Parker Spring and Palm Canyon Collections

New Image4

New Image5    Warby Parker Spring Collection 2014 Home Try-On Box

About Warby Parker

Warby Parker is an eyewear company with a mission to not only sell affordable and stylish glasses, but to also give back by donating one pair of glasses to someone in need for every pair sold. Originally created by four friends, Warby Parker’s innovative business strategy has resulted in a memorable and quirky company personality, a strong sense of corporate responsibility, and high-quality products. From their authentic desire to help others to their marketing strategies like the home try-on program, it’s no wonder Fast Company has named them the number one most innovative company in retail. Read the entire article here.

Needless to say, when Warby Parker reached out to me to write a post about their Spring and Palm Canyon Collections, I jumped at the opportunity.

At-Home Try-On Program

To learn more about their glasses, I ordered 5 pairs (3 frames, 2 sunglasses) through their at-home try-on program. This is one of my favorite qualities of Warby Parker. Their at-home try-on program allows you to select five frames you want to try on, they send them to you (their shipping is lightning fast), you try them on, and ship them back for free after five days.

They have a hashtag #WarbyHomeTryOn where people tag pictures of themselves wearing their five choices and people can weigh-in on what looks best (including Warby Parker!). I could go on and on about what an amazing concept this is. I highly recommend participating in this program even if you do not end up purchasing a pair. It’s easy, fun, and free!

Warby Parker Spring Collection

Warby Parker’s Spring Collection

All of the frames and sunglasses I ordered through the at-home try-on program are part of Warby Parker’s Spring Collection. With eight new shapes and six new colors, there’s a little something for everybody. It’s such a whimsical collection, I love it!

I surprised myself because I actually loved every single pair I tried on. Who would have thought a bright blue frame would look good? Personally, I liked their “Finch” frames and “Lowry” sunglasses the most. Their over-sized qualities made my nose look thinner and smaller (always a plus) and were fun enough without distracting from the rest of my face.

Which ones are your favorite? Tweet at me or comment below!

Warby Parker’s Palm Canyon Collection

Unfortunately, the Palm Canyon Collection frames were not available through the at-home try-on program. Regardless, I still love this collection! It’s extremely light, refreshing, and playful. Inspired by Palm Springs, each pair makes you yearn for summertime – or at least spring break!

My favorite design concept of this collection is the light-wash wood on the “Wheeler” sunglasses and the fact that no two pairs in this collection are alike! The warm, resort feeling of this collection will brighten up any outfit.

Warby Parker not only produces amazing eyewear, but they have such a great mission backing them. I’m excited to see where this company goes from here. They’re really going to make an impact in the world!

Please check out their other frames in other collections as well! I strongly encourage you to participate in their free at-home try-on program even if it’s just for fun!

Warby Parker, you’re doing it right.

This is my go-to outfit for when I want to be comfy but look put together. The Hudson jeans feel like sweatpants – they’re so soft and stretchy! The Sofft booties are the the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned and definitely add that special touch to this outfit. Finally, the gold and black cardigan (might I just add that this is THE most Theta item of clothing) from Forever 21 really completes the look by dressing it up a bit. I always get compliments on this outfit – it’s definitely one of my favorites!

Exploring SoCal: The LAB/The CAMP Antimall

I'm OBSESSED with this murial! This was at "The Camp" near the back, sort of hidden. I loved the organized chaos about it. It's authentic and graffiti-eque. Stunning!

Looking to enjoy some delicious locally-sourced food? Do you enjoy discovering handcrafted jewelry and clothes? Maybe you’re just looking for a fun new date spot.

Personally, I LOVE exploring. My friend, Nikki, told me about this place in Costa Mesa called “The LAB” and then across the street from it is a similar “antimall” called “The CAMP.” I decided to check it out! Between the incredible incorporation of nature into every aspect of the building design, the amazingly unique stores, and incredible food, this place really hits a home-run.

Every path was lined with plants I have never seen before – exotic cacti and beautiful, blooming flowers. Tiny, brightly colored trailers held local shops with handmade products. The stores ranged from the ever-popular Urban Outfitters to the consignment store Buffalo Exchange. Restaurants serving delicious tea and all organic foods were everywhere you looked. I wish I had come with an appetite because I wanted to try everything I saw!

Not only is this the most photogenic and beautiful mall I have ever seen, but it was also the only mall I actually wanted to explore and learn more about. Everything was beautiful, intentional, and detailed. If you’re looking to support your local community, shop somewhere fairly sustainable and “green,” hungry for some fresh, authentic food, or looking for an adventure, I recommend checking this place out. You won’t be disappointed.
