Surviving Finals with The Classy South!

Surviving Finals

Surviving Finals

I’ve teamed up with Corbin from The Classy South to bring you the best finals week survival guide. She covered study tips while I focused on de-stressing techniques. Be sure to head over to her blog to check out her helpful advice!

We all know that final exams can be overwhelmingly stressful, so I figured I’d offer up some simple things you can do to relax.

Make a Check-List

Crossing items off your list is so satisfying and will keep you motivated to keep going. It will also help you plan out your time so you can manage when to study and when to schedule in breaks. For every hour of studying, schedule in fifteen to thirty minutes to relax.

Drink Water & Tea

Staying hydrated is the key to staying on focus while studying but will also improve your overall health. When you take care of your body, your mind will be at ease.

Listen to Your Favorite Music

Blast a little Sam Smith, Michael Buble, Ed Sheeran or whatever will help keep you calm and focused. Whatever your jam is, play it. It will boost your mood and you’ll probably end up singing along with a big smile on your face.

Have a Dance Party

When you just can’t hold it in any longer, let it out through a crazy dance party. Shake it off T-Swift style and you’ll instantly notice those nerves vanishing.

Take a Hot Bath/Shower

When you’re stressed, your muscles become tense and knotted. Feel the stress melting away in a nice hot bath or shower.

Work Out

Exercise releases endorphins which will boost your energy and mood. It’s one of the best things you can do for your mind and body.

Bake Cookies

Sometimes you have to indulge a little bit when you’re stressed beyond belief. Nibble on some cookie dough, get some studying in while they bake, and then savor every bite while your worries drift away.

Hug it Out

There’s nothing better when you’re stressed out than a huge embrace from a loved one. There is so much emotional comfort found in physical touch.

This Positively

One grade is not (most likely) going to change your life. For the most part, you already know what you know. You’ve worked all semester learning this stuff. If you think you’re going to do well, you’re more likely to do well. Remember that life exists beyond school and there are far more important things in life than grades. And above all, know that you are amazing and brilliant, no matter what happens.

Look at Pictures of Cute Animals

When all else fails, look at baby puppies. I did you not, looking at pictures of cute animals is scientifically proven to improve your mood and reduce stress. To get you jump started, here’s some pictures of mine and my boyfriend’s puppy, Darwin.

Six Books Every Undergraduate Woman Needs to Read

2. Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham

There’s no question that Lena Dunham is known for her refreshing and honest voice. This collection of her essays shed light on her struggles and triumphs both professionally and personally. Her stories are hilarious, heartbreaking, cringe-worthy, and above all, ones we can all relate to.

3. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling’s memoir is honest and hilarious. She walks readers through every step of her life – goofy pictures of her younger self included. You will feel like Mindy’s best friend after reading this.

4. Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg

More serious than the rest of the books on this list, Lean In focuses on professionalism and success in the workplace. This book has given me personally so many tools that I have used already in the workplace. It will give readers tangible and concrete strategies to implement while climbing up to the career of your dreams.

5. Yes Please by Amy Poehler

The long-awaited memoir by Amy Poehler will leave you with your sides aching from laughter. Amy’s wise words permiate these pages and wind themselves through stories, lists, pictures, and even poetry.

6. #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso

This is also on the more serious side as Sophia Amoruso – the CEO of Nasty Gal – discusses her road to success. Be inspired creatively, intellectually, spiritually, and professionally by her story. If you are interested in entrepreneurship, feminism, fashion, business, or just kicking ass in general, this is a read for you.

15 Lessons I Learned from Heartbreak

unnamed

Capture

For those of you who read my blog, you know I rarely get very personal on here. I keep my personal life private, however, I have recently experienced life-altering heartbreak that has taught me so much about myself. I want to share those lessons with you to help and encourage anybody else going through heartbreak of any sort. Whether it’s a breakup, an affair, a death of a loved one, addiction, a fight with your best friend, anything; you are not alone.

1. Keep yourself as busy as possible

When your heart is broken, one of the hardest parts is getting up every morning and going about daily life. Your brain screams at you to shut down completely. I guarantee you will feel so much better once you get up, dress up, and do life. Keep yourself on-track with assignments and work. Take care of those little things that are actually within your control. While you’re occupied with all of these other tasks and activities, your brain won’t focus on the pain.

2. It is also perfectly okay to cry for a whole day and eat an obscene amount of ice cream in one sitting

Although staying busy is crucial, you’re allowed to feel sorrow and grief. It is critical to take that time to just feel it all and let it out. Cry until you can’t cry anymore. Scream. Watch a sappy chick-flick. Eat an entire tub of ice cream. Indulge yourself in those physical comforts for a little while. You can’t keep all your emotions inside all the time – you have to let them out.

3. You are allowed to be angry

Bad things happen to good people. It sucks. Life does not seem fair a lot of the time – get angry about it. If your boyfriend dumped you, listen to some angry breakup music. Feeling anger for brief amounts of time will help you feel empowered. Be careful though, do not let anger create resentment and bitterness. Let it swell up inside of you, let it out in a constructive manner, and then be done with it.

4. Find a constructive activity that brings you comfort

Sometimes you need an outlet during these hard times. Let your anger or stress out by hitting the gym. Write down your feelings in a journal. Find comfort in your faith. Whatever it is, find something that brings you peace and healing and do that frequently. For me, it’s prayer, worship music, and blogging. Find your happy place that brings you clarity and stick with it.

5. Although alone time can be restoring, it can also lead to a downward spiral

When you are alone with your thoughts, it is extremely easy to get caught up in them. Like I said earlier, it’s healthy to have a good cry every once in a while. However, when you are experiencing grief, it’s incredibly difficult to stay composed when you are alone which makes it hard to get anything done. Surround yourself with people. For example, do your homework in the library or at Starbucks. Go somewhere where you can be around other people even if you don’t want to interact with them.

6. Your friends and family will save your life

The great thing about life is that we never have to do it alone. In order to heal and process, you need to surround yourself with people who love you and care for you. Talking through your heartache and pain is the most healing thing you can do. It’s so easy to feel alone in times of hardship. Take the time to reach out to people and fill them in on what’s going on with you. Whether you want advice or just need to vent, find someone to confide in. Their kindness and generosity will surprise you. You cannot go through these things alone no matter how strong you think you are – you need people helping you and checking up on you.

7. Focus on the future – do not dwell on the “what ifs”

If you focus on the past, it will eat you up inside. You absolutely cannot dwell on the past and wonder how you could have changed things. Sometimes heartbreak can be self-inflicted – you messed up. Take responsibility for your actions. If you were a victim, work towards forgiving those who wronged you. Regardless of how a situation happened or who’s to blame, the important thing is to learn from it and to move on. What happened, happened and you have to deal with that reality. Your energy will be much better spent focusing on the future and moving forward.

8. Time will heal you

It sounds cheesy to say, but ultimately, time heals all wounds. Emotional pain can be all-consuming at times and those wounds will feel like they’ll never heal. But there is this funny thing life tends to do: it goes on. You will grow stronger by the day even if you don’t feel like it. Slowly, that pain will subside and you will find happiness again.

9. Don’t make any big decisions when highly emotional

Don’t get a tattoo. Don’t close the door on a failed relationship immediately. Don’t give up hope on a friendship. Don’t go on a Facebook un-friending spree. Don’t decide to move. Don’t quit your job. Breathe. When you’re angry or blinded by grief, you may want to make dramatic life-changing decisions. However, this could make your heartbreak so much worse. Wait until you are calm and in a better place to make any definitive choices.

10. Sometimes you have to fake it ’till you make it

Yep, some days are going to SUCK! Like I said, getting out of bed is going to be rough. But I promise you, if you slap a smile on your face (even if it’s 150% fake), you will end up genuinely smiling. It’s the weirdest thing, but it really works.

11. Do not neglect your health

I cannot stress this enough. Sleepless nights, an overdose of comfort food, and headaches from crying can make you feel so much more miserable than is necessary. Make sure you are eating healthy food, getting enough sleep, and listening to your body. Sometimes working out or even going for a walk will help clear your mind. If you need to call in sick to work for a mental health day or to just get stuff around the house done, do that. Another little thing that will help you feel better is dressing up – slap on some bright lipstick and throw on your favorite outfit. It may seem silly, but it will ultimately help boost your confidence which will help you feel better!

12. Know that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger

Pain is temporary. Although the grief or heartache you are experiencing now may seem permanent, it will eventually fade. The lessons you will take away from this experience will mold you into a stronger individual. The reasons behind this pain may not seem clear right now, but I promise they will eventually. You come out of this time wiser and stronger than you ever imagined. Have faith when all hope seems lost that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

13. Do something totally random and fun

Go to an outdoor concert, spend the day at a theme park, have a girls night, whatever – just do something that gets you out of the house and laughing. Do something that will completely take your mind off of the situation and remind you of all the happiness and joy that is possible in the world.

14. Remember that you deserve the absolute best

You deserve to be happy. Whatever is happening right now to cause you pain in your life is temporary and will ultimately lead to your success. You deserve to feel joy and to feel full of life. When somebody hurts you deeply, remember that you are better than that. Demand respect and don’t settle for anything less than you deserve – get rid of those people who treat you otherwise. If something doesn’t bring you happiness or make you a better person, then it has no place in your life. Invest time in the people who support you through this hardship.

15. If you can change your thoughts, you can change your life.

You can’t change what happened in the past, but you absolutely can control your future. The first step towards doing that is controlling your own thoughts. If you think the world is over and that you will never find happiness again, your actions will reflect that. If you think that you are strong and can survive anything, your actions will likewise reflect that. Think happy thoughts and they will impact your life. Think positively about negative situations. Try to find the good in the bad. This is probably the most important lesson I’ve learned. It’s so easy to feel hopeless, to dwell on the past, to hold onto resentment or anger. But when you change your attitude for the better, your quality of life will improve dramatically. Don’t let heartbreak have the power to destroy your life. You are in control. Let go of anger, use your sorrow as your fuel, and when one door closes, know there is another one opening. Go find it.

What have you learned from heartbreak? What advice do you have for others going through a difficult time?

Disclaimer: Sometimes these steps don’t work for everybody. If you are going through a hard time and feel like there is no hope and you can’t seem to shake the sadness, there is help for you. Talk to a doctor or counselor about what you are feeling or visit the National Institute for Mental Health website to learn more. If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.

Campus Safety Tips & SABRE

campus safety 3

This post is sponsored by Her Campus Blogger Network and SABRE.

SABRE safety1 in 5 women will be a victim of sexual assault on their college campus. It’s unfortunately common knowledge that personal safety can be a major issue among college students. Between unintentionally putting ourselves at risk to others’ careless actions endangering us, there is always something to be cautious about. While this might sound hopeless, since there is much more awareness about these issues lately, there are more and more technologies and services that combat these risks. Keep on reading for some great campus safety tips and more information about SABRE’s College Safety Program.

The Security Equipment Corporation with SABRE is one of those amazing services I was talking about before. They produce pepper spray and various other self-defense products. I was fortunate enough to receive a sample of a few of their products and am very please with them. But what are self-defense tools good for if you don’t have the basic understanding of self-defense? That is a key question SABRE is attempting to solve through their College Safety Programs. These programs can come to your campus and teach you techniques to outsmart and avoid potential threats. They will also teach you how to escape if you end up in a sticky situation. Their goal is to help students feel prepared, unafraid, and strong so that they can fully enjoy their college experience.

campus safety tips 4

  1. Never walk alone at night. If you have to, stay in well-lit areas only
  2. Do not walk or run with headphones in
  3. If going somewhere unfamiliar, map out where you’re going beforehand
  4. When at parties, use the buddy system. Have one or two people you stick with no matter what
  5. Utilize campus safety resources like Women’s Transit, Public Safety, Campus Police, etc. Have those contact numbers saved in your phone
  6. Know where the emergency phones/lights are on campus
  7. Let people know where you’re heading – whether its a roommate or friend, be sure somebody knows where you are in case you don’t show up or return back on time
  8. Get your keys out before you get to the door – rummaging around in your purse means more time for an attacker to catch you off-guard
  9. Be alert and pay attention to your surroundings
  10. Keep your head up – no looking down at your shoes or phone while walking
  11. Trust your gut – if something feels off, get out of there or seek help
  12. Report suspicious activity to authorities
  13. Keep emergency supplies like SABRE pepper spray on-hand just in case

Guest Post: I was a Greek Life Skeptic…Until I Joined a Sorority

KD pic

Hey y’all! As most of you know, I’ve been beyond busy with transferring to a new school and sorority recruitment. Luckily, I have some amazing guest posts lined up for you to read! The first one is from Frances Fuqua from the fashion, beauty, and lifestyle blog A Dash of South. Her post is all about turning from a Greek Life skeptic into an advocate for the amazing benefits sorority life has given her. I hope you enjoy it and check out her blog as well!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

I come from a southern family that is very involved in Greek Life. Where I live, the first question you get asked when you’re home from college after, “where do you go to school?” is, “what sorority are you in?” And for some reason I never really liked the attachment to fraternities and sororities that everyone around me seemed to have. I felt like joining a sorority would mean conforming and being a follower instead of a leader, or “paying” to have friends. Not to mention the way sororities are portrayed in movies and on television.

So, when I left for St. Louis to start college two years ago, I was determined to avoid Greek Life at all costs and make my own way in the new environment. I quickly realized how hard it is to find people you connect with at a school with thousands of students. (I went to a very small high school with less than 100 people in my grade; so making friends had never been a problem before). It was hard to meet people simply because I was meeting so many people everyday that I couldn’t really figure out a way to get to know anyone super well.

I started noticing all the girls in sororities and just how much closer they seemed with each other than I did with anyone I knew. I realized that if I wanted to be happier at school I should take every opportunity to find a community I felt comfortable in within the university.

I joined Kappa Delta in Spring 2013 and it is without a doubt the best decision I have ever made. Not only have I met my best friends, roommates, and mentors; I have found a group of women that I know have all the same values and priorities that I do.  I have found a community that will support me no matter what.

My big and I on bid day, Fall 2013

Here is my best advice for those who may not have considered Greek Life:

One// If you’re on the fence about rushing, go for it. Most people who are unsure are pleasantly surprised and most people who decide not to regret the decision. If you’ve thought about joining Greek Life even just once, it’s worth it to try it out. After all, all the magic happens when you leave your comfort zone.

Two// Remember that rush probably seems a little fake because it is a little bit fake. We pull out all the stops in order to impress potential new members, and this can sometimes seem a little bit staged. Instead of focusing on the matching outfits and the cheering and the videos, pay attention to how comfortable you feel at each sorority and the general personality/vibe if the group. That’s what sticks around after the show is over.  And just remember: we do all the showing off for you J

Three// Don’t let one bad conversation ruin an entire sorority for you. One person isn’t always representative of the entire group. BUT, if you have one ah-mazing conversation with someone, really take note.  Chances are, if you really connect with one girl, you will really connect with a lot of her sisters

Four// Don’t stress out too much about trying to impress the sororities. Trust me when I say we’re trying just as hard to impress you. Just try to relax and have a normal conversation like you would have with anyone. We enjoy the conversations where we talk about time travel or swap stories about our most embarrassing moments much more than the ones where the potential new member tries to brag about her extracurricular activities and grades.

Last but not least, have fun! Rush is an amazing experience and joining a sorority that you love is even better.

My New Adventure

Transferring from a school of 6,000 to one of 23,000 students. Moving into a house full of 70 w0men I’ve never met. Moving from Orange, CA where the coldest temperature was 60 degrees to Pullman, WA where the coldest temperature can be -30 degrees. Joining a sorority of 150 women I’ve never met. Taking classes with 500 other students when the biggest class I’ve ever taken was 85 people.

Yeah, you could say I’m a little bit scared but at least I have good reason!

Today marks the beginning of an incredibly exciting and terrifying new chapter in my life. After spending two years at a small, private university, I have made the decision to transfer to a large, public in-state university. While I am 100% confident that I made the right choice in transferring, it does not mean I’m not scared to death.

Luckily, I am not just jumping into a sea of 23,000 other students and being left to drown. I am extremely blessed that I can very easily re-affiliate with the chapter of my sorority at my new school. It’s a really easy process to transfer – you just have to fill out some simple paperwork! Since I will immediately dive into that community, I will have 150 new friends right off the bat. I am also moving into the sorority house there (my old university did not have Greek housing at all so the concept of even having a sorority house is new to me!). There are roughly 70 women who live in the “Theta Mansion” at my new university and thankfully, I have already met about 20 of them! I also had the privilege of meeting my day room roommate who is the definition of perfection.

I don’t want to bore you all too much with my whole life story, but I wanted to let you all know that I will be very busy as I adjust to this immense change in my life. I will have at least one blog post up a week but I will try to do more. Blogging is still one of my many passions and it is how I de-stress and unwind. If I had all the time in the world, I would be cranking out at least one post a day. Unfortunately, that just won’t be possible for the next month or so.

If you are interested in guest posting on my blog, that would be absolutely amazing!

I would promote your post through my social media and your post would be seen by all of my readers – providing great exposure for you. Please email me at smalltownrootsandcowboyboots@gmail.com if you are interested! Thank you so much.

To all of my blogging friends and loyal readers: thank you so much for being so supportive. I’m so sorry I won’t be able to give my undivided attention to blogging over the next few weeks. I appreciate your patience and loyalty.

Here’s to new adventures and new friends! Wish me luck!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

On a separate note, can we please all just take a moment and appreciate how amazing this hat is? It was given to me by Turnip Seed – a super cute custom embroidery company. They make monogrammed hats, purses, totes, phone cases, everything! If you know my blog, you know I LOVE personalized things especially when it comes to sorority themed items! I love this hat because I can wear it so many different ways – wish a causal outfit like this, dressed up with a button-down and statement necklace, or even working out. It’s such a fun way to represent an organization near and dear to my heart while also looking stylish.

This shirt is from College Hill Custom Threads – a clothing company that specializes in creating custom order merchandise for groups or individuals. This was the shirt they released for all Washington State girls going to Watershed Music Festival (notice the Tim McGraw lyric remix on the back?). I have a feeling I’m going to live in this shirt – it’s so cute and again, I love representing my school while looking cute at the same time!

Blogging 101: Photography (Part 1)

Blogging 101 iPhone Photography

BLOGGING 101Photography is a tricky subject for me because I don’t have a photographer to take my pictures. For the most part, all of my pictures are taken by me on a self timer with a point-and-shoot camera I bought over five years ago. Needless to say, I am far from an expert.

I’ve recently started looking for a photographer willing to work with me for trade (I promote their business in exchange for pictures) and have already had so many great people reach out to me expressing interest. Now I just have to pick the right person!

This section of my Blogging 101 Series will be focused on do-it-yourself photography: iPhone photography, editing apps, point-and-shoot photography, tripods and self-timers, and free photo editing online. I hope you find this useful! Please ask away if you have any questions at all and I’d love to hear if you have any other tips!

iPhone Photography

If you are just starting out as a blogger, chances are that you have yet to purchase a nice camera or know of any photographers (or even have a budget for one!). Even though I’ve been blogging for almost a year, I don’t have money for a photographer and I still have a pretty crappy camera.

That being said, I rely on my iPhone for a lot of my pictures – especially when I’m on the go.

Here are some great tips for getting the perfect snap on your phone’s camera:

  • Know your options – you can take photos in a normal size, square cropped (great for posting directly to Instagram!), or panorama.
  • Focus, focus, focus – the lighting will completely change based off of where you tap on the screen to focus (see the pictures below for an example of this!)
  • Pay attention to lighting
  • Take multiple shots of the same thing – sometimes it’s very easy to get a blurry picture with a cell phone because your hand is shaky and they aren’t like professional cameras in that they auto-adjust to that
  • Pay attention to your surroundings – simple backgrounds look better than those that are cluttered
  • Don’t use the zoom. It dramataically decreases the quality. If you want to get closer, you need to physically get closer
  • Make sure the lens is clean
  • Don’t use the flash unless you absolutely HAVE to! If an image is too dark, adjust the brightness later or try to adjust the focus

Photo Editing Apps

Camera+ ($1.99)

This is by far my go-to photo editing app. There are so many great tools you can use such as a camera, fun filters, basic tools, crops, and borders. It has everything you could need – best $2 I’ve ever spent!

Facetune ($2.99)

This is my go-to photo editing app that is like Photoshop in the sense that you can whiten teeth, eliminate blemishes, etc. It’s great for on-the-go blogging when you don’t have access to a computer (or can’t afford Photoshop).

A Beautiful Mess ($0.99)

I primarily use this app when I have a photo that isn’t a square (meaning it won’t fit correctly on Instagram). You can easily zoom an image out so that it fits in a square frame and then upload to Instagram! I also love their little doodles and phrases you can slap on – super cute!

Moldiv (Free)

This is a good alternative to PicStitch – it’s basically the same thing. You can make collages really quickly with this app.

VSCOcam (Free)

This is my favorite filter app. They have ones that look very natural, which I love, and they also have the typical editing tools most apps have. Some people are die-hard loyal VSCOcam users and exclusively use it, but I find it more supplemental.

Picfx ($1.99)

This app has an abundance of filters, but what I especially like is the option to add light. You can add light spots or sun beams to your pictures which is always super fun!

FontCandy (Free)

Such a great app for adding font to your images. There’s endless options for exactly how you want to format it!

The following topics will be covered NEXT WEEK! I’m so sorry for the inconvenience. I’ve been out of town and things have been hectic, so I didn’t get around to it. But please come back next week for Photography Part 2!

  • Digital Camera (Point-and-Shoot) Photography
  • Tripods and Self Timers
  • Best Free Photo Editing Online
